Indian restaurant boss promises free curry to coronavirus affected Glaswegians

One of Glasgow's most famous Indian restaurants has responded to the coronavirus crisis in a novel fashion, by offering to give free curry to people affected by the deadly virus.

The Shish Mahal, the west end restaurant which claims to have invented the chicken tikka masala, say they will deliver a meal every night for two weeks to anyone in Glasgow who has to self-isolate in response to coronavirus.

As of yet, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in our city, with the first positive Scottish case being confirmed in Tayside on Sunday night. At latest count, there are 39 cases of coronavirus around the UK, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warning as many as 200,000 Scots could be hospitalised in a 'worst-case scenario'.

Speaking to Heart Radio, Shish Mahal owner Asif Ali said: "If - and we hope it doesn't happen - the coronavirus does come to Glasgow and affects one of our customers, they'll obviously have to self-isolate themselves, so for two weeks, we will deliver them a curry just to cheer them up."

"It's something to give back to our customers.

"Chicken tikka masala was invented by the Shish Mahal. So they can have that or any curry of their choice.

Speaking generally about the city's response to the growing fears surrounding coronavirus, Mr Ali praised Glaswegians, calling them 'a hardy bunch' who will just carry on regardless.

He added: "In Glasgow we're a hardy bunch and we just get on with it. People will go out, people will still eat, people will still drink. Glaswegians don't worry much and they just get on with their lives.

"What happens they'll deal with it."
