The incident reportedly took place on June 30 at Bombay Bites HCM, a popular Indian restaurant located in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh City, one of the city's busiest tourist hubs. The restaurant has accused an Indian family of damaging property, threatening staff, and creating a disturbance after employees allegedly requested that the parents stop their children from throwing objects around the dining area. The family's version of the incident has not yet been made public.
According to a statement issued by the restaurant, the situation began when staff noticed the children throwing tissues across the restaurant. Employees said they politely approached the parents and requested that they intervene to stop the disruptive behaviour.
However, the restaurant claims the situation escalated instead of calming down. In its statement, Bombay Bites HCM alleged that the children later began throwing plates and glasses, causing damage to the restaurant's property. Staff members also claimed that the parents argued with employees and allegedly used abusive language when confronted.
To support its claims, the restaurant shared CCTV screenshots on social media. The images show broken crockery scattered across the restaurant floor, staff cleaning up the mess, and what appears to be a heated exchange near the entrance. However, the screenshots alone do not independently verify every allegation made in the restaurant's statement.
Restaurant owner Aishwarya Khanna Singh alleged that the family refused to accept responsibility for the damage caused during the incident. She further claimed that the family introduced themselves as social media influencers during the confrontation. According to Singh, the restaurant has preserved CCTV footage and other records related to the incident.
Sharing the restaurant's stance, Singh emphasised that hospitality should never be mistaken for tolerance of inappropriate behaviour.
"Let us be very clear: A restaurant is not a playground. Our staff are not targets for anger or entitlement. And influence does not place anyone above basic manners," she wrote.
She further stressed that civic responsibility begins with teaching children to respect public spaces, take responsibility for their actions, and understand that rules exist to ensure everyone can enjoy shared spaces safely.
The restaurant reiterated that it welcomes guests from all backgrounds but expects everyone to treat staff, fellow diners, and restaurant property with respect.
"Hospitality is our job. Basic decency is everyone's responsibility," the statement concluded.
The incident quickly gained traction on social media, with many users expressing support for the restaurant. Several commenters argued that respectful behaviour in public spaces is essential, especially when children are involved.
One social media user suggested that the matter should have been reported to local authorities instead of being addressed solely through an online post. Another wrote that teaching children proper behaviour in public is one of the most important responsibilities of parenting. Many others emphasised that hospitality workers deserve respect and should not have to endure aggression while performing their duties.
At the same time, some users urged caution, pointing out that only the restaurant's account has been shared publicly so far. They argued that it would be fair to hear the family's side before reaching definitive conclusions.
The incident has since reignited broader conversations about public etiquette, responsible parenting, and traveller conduct. Many online users noted that regardless of where people are travelling, restaurants remain shared public spaces where courtesy, respect for staff, and consideration for fellow diners should always be expected.
