Indian businessman abducted near his shop in Kabul

AMRITSAR: A 50-year-old Indian has reportedly been abducted at gunpoint from Kabul.

Indian World Forum (IWF) president Puneet Singh said on Wednesday that the Indian national, identified as Bansri Lal Arendhe, was allegedly abducted on Tuesday from near his chemist’s shop. Bansri, a resident of Khost, had been living in Gurdwara Karte Parwan. His family lives in Delhi.

Lal owns a pharmaceuticals business in Kabul. He was on the way to his shop along with his staff when his car was hit from behind and he was abducted at gunpoint. He was taken away in a green Toyota Corolla.

Puneet, who had an active role in the evacuation of Hindus and Sikhs from Afghanistan, said Bansri’s staff escaped the abduction bid.

Unconfirmed reports said Bansri’s staff were beaten up by the abductors.

Charan Singh, an Afghan Sikh who had migrated to Moscow, said the incident appeared to be the handiwork of local criminals.

Puneet said the local community was following up the abduction case with the officials concerned and a case had been registered with local investigation agencies. "The MEA is monitoring the situation," he said.

Sources said that a Taliban team was searching for the missing Indian national.
