Hours before Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on Tuesday to extend the nationwide lockdown until May 3, the Congress party released a video in which party president Sonia Gandhi lauded the citizens for showing restraint by staying indoors. She also expressed confidence that India with a strong morale will emerge victorious in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic soon.
‘Patriotic effort’
“Today, your support in dealing with the crisis due to coronavirus is no less patriotism. The country is able to fight this virus only because of your help and support. I do not have words to thank you,” she said.
Highlighting the efforts of the “corona warriors” like doctors, health workers, sanitation workers, police and security personnel and government officials, in fighting the pandemic despite inadequate personal protection, Ms. Gandhi also referred to reports of discrimination against doctors.
“This is quite wrong and our civilisation and culture doesn't allow it,” she said in her message in Hindi.
The Congress chief also extended her party’s solidarity in the fight against COVID-19.
‘Extend rations to those unlisted’
“I assure you that whether the Congress party is in power or in opposition, we will stand by you in this battle. I am confident that, with a high morale, we will emerge from this crisis very soon. You stay at home and be safe,” she said.
“Stay in your houses. Wash your hands repeatedly and step out only if it's absolutely essential. And always cover your face with a mask or gamcha (towel) or a chunni (stole). All of you should co-operate in this fight,” she added
The Congress chief also lauded the efforts of common people and stated that every Indian is fighting the pandemic unitedly, be it feeding the poor or offering dry ration or distributing masks and sanitizers.
