'India was Singapore’s second largest source market for inbound travellers last year'

NEW DELHI: India emerged as Singapore’s second largest source market for inbound travellers last year. Singapore Tourism Board (STB) on Thursday said Indians accounted for almost 6.9 lakh of the overall 63 lakh global visitor arrivals, with the biggest source market being neighbouring Indonesia.

Now in a bid to attract more Indians, STB and its industry partners have launched several limited-time promotions.

“These include airfares starting from Rs 6,000; 50% off airfares for children, and other exclusive discounts on various experiences. STB has joined (hands) with Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Sentosa Development Corporation, Mandai Wildlife Group … to urge travellers to explore unique activities and experiences,” STB said in a statement.

More importantly, India has from February 13, 2023, dropped the requirement of people coming from China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea, Thailand and Japan to undergo a Covid-19 test before leaving for the country. This requirement was introduced late last year due to a surge in cases in some countries and then dropped as the situation changed for the better.

GB Srithar, STB’s regional director (India) said: “Summer vacations are a treasured time for families across India to spend quality time with their loved ones, and we are glad that Singapore continues to be a favourite destination…. This summer, we look forward to welcoming our Indian friends and fans to experience our new and transformed attractions and experiences.”

Singapore Airlines GM (India) Sy Yen Chen said: “This summer, to celebrate the joy of family holidays, we are offering this special children’s discount on airfares as it is our way of welcoming our youngest customers back on board for a fun-filled vacation. The Lion City continues to be a popular destination for the India market, and the strong demand we are seeing from across the country is testimony to this fact. Now, with up to 50% off on child fares to Singapore, there’s never been a better time to plan your next family holiday.”

Singapore Airlines currently operates 96 flights a week from eight cities across India.
