Both teams unchanged from their final group stage games, and the match is underway. India won the toss and decided to bat first on what looks like a good pitch to set a target as Kiwi captain Kane Williamson says he would also have batted.

Virat Kohli led the way with his 50th ODI century as India scored a towering 397-3 that also featured a majestic 67-ball century form Shreyas Iyer. Kiwi seamer Trent Boult went around the park in his 10 overs, leaving New Zealand with a mountain to climb if they're to reach a third successive World Cup final. Their run chase will start shortly.

India vs New Zealand Cricket World Cup semi-final preview

If the group stage of the Cricket World Cup is a series on bite-size hors d'oeuvres designed to whet the appetite, then the knockout stage is an in-your-face burger, an all-out assault on the senses and dripping in intrigue. India vs New Zealand in the first semi-final more than lives up to that billing. A repeat of the 2019 last four clash in which the Black Caps won by just 18 runs, it features the highly fancied hosts desperate to end their curse against the Kiwis.

India go into the encounter as undoubted favourites. Rohit Sharma and Co have swept all before them in their own backyard this tournament, winning nine out of nine group stage matches, including a four-wicket win over New Zealand nearly a month ago. Batter-supreme Virat Kohli is the tournament's top scorer, averages one run shy of a century and has more scores over 50 than anyone else, while skipper Sharma tops the list of most boundaries (and sixes) hit. The semi-final venue also holds fond memories for India – the Wankhede Stadium hosted the 2011 final, the last time they won the 50-over crown.

New Zealand, meanwhile, had won their first four group stage games before that India defeat sparked a run of four losses as the 2015 and 2019 runners-up only reached the knockout stage on net run rate after a final-game win against Sri Lanka. Kane Williamson, who recovered from injury just in time to captain the Black Caps in India, has an average in the 90s that is only bettered by Kohli, while strike bowler Trent Boult took 3/33 against Sri Lanka that helped secure progress. They remain an exceptionally experienced squad, full of determination to exorcise the ghosts of that 2019 super-over defeat to England in one of the most enthralling games of cricket in history. They upset the mighty Indians four years ago at this stage, why can't they do so again?
