England vs India - as it happened: England win thrilling first Test by 31 runs

England won the first Test after a thrilling final day against India.

Ben Stokes took the crucial wicket of Virat Kohli on the final morning as England climbed off the canvas to record a 31-run win to take the lead in the five-match series.

Kohli had threatened to take the game away from Joe Root's side, as he did with his masterful 149 in the first innings, but Stokes was equal trapping him LBW for 51.

And then the Durham all-rounder, who will miss the Lord's test to appear in court, returned to dismiss last man Hardik Pandya and spark jubilant scenes.

What a four days of cricket. Here's our report.

13:20
Virat Kolhi is understandably disappointed but remains proud of his side's display.

I think it was a great game of cricket - great for everyone watching it - so we're glad to be a part of it. There were a couple of comebacks so we showed good character there but a team like England won't let you comeback every time. We could have applied ourselves better but I'm still really proud of what we've done.

We have to take the positives, show our character and do more with the bat. Our bowlers were excellent in the second innings so we can build on that for the rest of the series.

13:10
Root again.

We were in a good position on day one but at no point did you think it was a 400-450 pitch - 350-375 would've been a good score, but our bowlers got us in the game.

It's not really my style to kiss off Virat. You always gets a great series between England and India. Hopefully we get four more Tests with the same result but we can also see some more brilliant cricket.

13:03
More from Root.

It fills you with confidence when you win a close game like that. We have to make sure we turn up with the same attitude and approach and tighten up on a few things for Lord's.

There was always something in it for the bowlers, it wasn't freescoring at any time and credit has to go to both sides' bowling attacks.

12:58
More from Root

Sam Curran's knock changed the game. There were other periods in the game beforehand that could've gone our way but to play that innings under pressure was brilliant.

Then the bowlers were outstanding. Last night India could've got on top and swung it in their favour but none of the bowlers let me down.

Dawid Malan is a fantastic slip fielder, that's why he's there and why he stayed there. He's got the backing of the whole group and credit for him for sticking in there and taking that catch this morning.

12:53
Joe Root is delighted to have got over the line.

What a game of cricket, from start to finish, swung both ways throughout. Credit to India, they played some fantastic cricket along the way.

I'm so proud of the group, we just wanted to show that fight and desire of the three previous days and we did.

12:48
Sam Curran is the man if the match after a brilliant performance with bat and ball.

12:35
Wow. What can you say? A brilliant Test match from start to finish.

Joe Root's batting in the first innings before Virat Kohli's masterful century in reply. Ashwin showed his genius to send England scrambling before Sam Curran's late counter gave them a puncher's chance.

Kohli threatened to take it away from them again but when Ben Stokes finally dismissed him on the fourth morning the end was nigh.

Superb cricket all round. Bring on Lord's.
12:32
England win and go 1-0 up in the five-match series

12:32

Over 55: India 162 all out (England win)

Stokes in to bowl at Pandya and, yes, that's it. It's full, straight, moves just enough and a juicy nick is gratefully and gleefully grabbed by Cook at slip.

England win by 31 runs. What a Test match.
12:28

Over 54: India 162-9 (chasing 194)

Pandya on strike to Rashid and you wonder, given his white ball prowess, whether he'll have a dig at him here even with the field back. He swipes at one but doesn't get all of it and it'll only be two. Yadav again has one ball to negotiate and does with relative ease. India need 32. England need one.
12:25
This was the last man to go. Sharma trapped in front by a lovely piece of bowling from Rashid.

12:24

Over 53: 159-9 (chasing 194)

We're into a slightly odd phase here as Pandya is both determined not to get out - obviously - but also determined not to score runs. Boundaries yes, but with Root spreading the field there is precious chance of that. Pandya takes a single off the fourth ball of the over leaving Yadav with one to survive. He does.
12:21

Over 52: 158-9 (chasing 194)

Rashid gets the first look at Yadav and he'll be relishing I'm sure. More turn and bounce for Rashid but Yadav plays it well. He does swipe at the last ball of the over but there's no run. Pandya is determined to get back on strike.
12:19

Over 51: India 158-9 (chasing 194)

Stokes back on as England strive for the one wicket they need. Pandya is in survival mode here and while he didn't farm the strike with Sharma alongside him it appears that strategy has changed with Yadav at the crease. No need to run for those though as a glorious shot flies over mid off for four.
12:11

Over 50: 154-9 (chasing 194)

So only the one over for Curran as Root shuffles his pack and pulls out Rashid for the first time today. The leggy removed Sharma in the first innings with a naughty googly and that clearly is in the England captain's thinking here. He starts with a googly again that Sharma nearly falls over trying to snuff out. Another spits and flashes past the outside edge. And another googly does him all ends up for what looks like LBW. The umpire doesn't think so but Rashid likes it and England review. It looks good to me... certainly no bat... OUT. Rashid has his man. An inspired bowling change from Root. England need one.
12:03

Over 49: India 152-8 (chasing 194)

Stokes chugging in against Sharma and that's squirted through to third man where there's inexplicably no fielder. Stokes has the teapot on and he's not happy with his skipper and you can understand why. Stokes responds with a fierce, rearing bouncer that Sharma does well to protect himself from as it balloons over the cordon and on to the boundary. Surely there needs to be a third man now? More runs and India now only need 42. This one isn't over yet.
12:00
Was this the moment?

11:58

Over 48: India 142-8 (chasing 194)

Here is Curran. He got Pandya in the first innings with a brute of a yorker and he'll be looking to swing the ball in late again here you feel. The crowd are up, Edgbaston is rocking. If only this was a hundred balls long and we had 15 per side, eh? New man Ishant Sharma on strike to the Surrey man. Some encouraging shape for him as he warms to his task. A good start.
11:49

Over 47: India 141-8 (chasing 194)

We have our first bowling change of the morning and rather than Curran, as was mooted, it's Stokes we'll see first. He bowled exceptionally in the first innings and picked up the wicket of Rahul last night.

Wow. That's a cracker and, yes, he's out. Kohli is gone. Stokes raps the Indian skipper right in front and it looks like it's knocking all three out. He reviews, of course he does, but yep, that's as plumb as they come. Kohli is gone and England believe again. Wow.

Stokes is the man for the big occasion and hang on, he has another. A nasty, rising delivery is too good for Mohammed Shami, who nicks through to Bairstow, and England are flying. They need two more to win.
