India vs Australia: David Warner breaks Sachin Tendulkar and AB de Villiers' World Cup record

NEW DELHI: In a thrilling clash against India at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, Australia opener David Warner made history by surpassing Sachin Tendulkar's record for the fastest to reach 1,000 World Cup runs.

Warner achieved this milestone in just 19 innings, outperforming Tendulkar and former South Africa skipper AB de Villiers, who both achieved the feat in 20 innings. The left-handed batsman sealed the record by smashing a boundary off Hardik Pandya's delivery.

Scorecard: India vs Australia

Tendulkar, widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history, held the record for the highest number of runs in the World Cup with 2,278 runs.

Warner, aged 36, has already scored over 6,000 runs in 151 ODIs and has proven to be a crucial player for the Australian team. This World Cup might be his last appearance in the tournament, making his quest for Australia's sixth World Cup crown even more significant.

Additionally, Warner became the fourth Australian batter to reach the 1,000 runs mark in ODI World Cups. He joins the likes of Ricky Ponting (1,743 runs), Adam Gilchrist (1,085 runs), and Mark Waugh (1,004 runs) in this elite club.

Fewest innings to 1000 runs in ODI World Cup:

19 - David Warner

20 - Sachin Tendulkar/ AB de Villiers

21 - Viv Richards/ Sourav Ganguly

22 - Mark Waugh

22 - Herschelle Gibbs
