India staring down barrel of early T20 World Cup exit after humbling New Zealand defeat

Pre-tournament favourites India are staring down the barrel of an early exit from the T20 World Cup after a humbling eight-wicket defeat by New Zealand.

Virat Kohli's side have now lost their opening two Super 12s matches following defeat by Pakistan in their tournament opener, meaning their chances of reaching the semi-finals are hanging by a thread.

India managed just 110-7 from their 20 overs as New Zealand's bowlers turned in an economical display.

Skipper Kohli could only manage nine from 17 deliveries, failing to hit a boundary in an innings symptomatic of his side's struggles.

India's only resistance came down the order with Hardik Pandya (23) and Ravi Jadeja (26) the only batsmen to reach 20.

Trent Boult starred with 3-20 from his four overs, while leg spinner Ish Sodhi took 2-17.

There was a scalp apiece for Tim Southee and Adam Milne, while Mitchell Santner went wicketless but conceded just 15 runs from his miserly four-over quota.

The run chase was comfortable for the Blackcaps, reaching their target of 111 in 14.3 overs with eight wickets to spare.

Martin Guptill fell for 20 in the fourth over, but a stand of 72 from Daryl Mitchell (40) and Kane Williamson (33*) ensured New Zealand would register their first win of the tournament after defeat to Pakistan in their opener.

Kohli gave an honest appraisal of his side after the game, suggesting some of his players couldn't cope with the expectation that comes with playing for India.

"I thought we were not brave enough with bat or ball. New Zealand had better intensity and body language and put us under pressure from the first ball onwards," he said.

"That happens in T20 cricket and is most often a result of hesitation with the bat.

"When you play for the Indian cricket team you have a lot of expectation, not only from the fans but the players themselves. We have embraced that over the years. Whoever plays for India has to learn how to cope with it and we haven't in these two games."

Both sides have fixtures against Namibia, Afghanistan and Scotland remaining.
