India star smashes Chris Gayle record with fastest double hundred in ODI history

India opener Ishan Kishan has smoked the fastest ever double hundred in ODI cricket after blasting 210 off just 131 balls against Bangladesh in Chattogram.

Kishan is just the sixth man in history to reach the landmark and did so quicker than anyone else, needing just 126 deliveries. He beat the previous record held by West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who scored a double hundred against Zimbabwe in the 2015 Cricket World Cup off just 138 balls.

In the women's game, New Zealand all-rounder Amelia Kerr scored a double hundred against Ireland in 2018 off 134 balls while Australia's Belinda Clark scored 229 off 155 balls against Denmark in the 1997 World Cup.

Kishan brutally smashed 34 boundaries in his innings, 24 fours and 10 sixes, and the 24-year-old's efforts were lauded by his peers. England star Jonny Bairstow tweeted: "India could get 500 here!! @ishankishan51 special @imVkohli to follow here I’m sure…"

Teammates Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah, who are both missing the series, were also quick to praise Kishan. Pandya added: "Outstanding! Well done Ishu So so proud of you baby! Well deserved @ishankishan51".

Bumrah, meanwhile, wrote: "Just sensational Ishan! Very special innings, well done". India legend Virender Sehwag added: "That's the way to do it. Brilliant from Ishan Kishan. This is the approach that will do Team India a world of good."

"What a phenomenal display of ball-striking by @ishankishan51," wrote VVS Laxman, who recently stood in as India's coach against New Zealand last month. "To get a double hundred in any format is awesome, to do so inside 35 overs is just mind-boggling! What a talent! I am sure this is the start of something truly special."

Former coach Ravi Shastri added: "Exuberance of youth at its best. Well done. As a youngster this is how you catch the bull by the horns and grab your opportunity with both hands - @ishankishan51".

Kishan shared a 290 run partnership with Virat Kohli, who also scored his first ODI century in over three years having last reached three figures in the format back in August 2019 against the West Indies.
