India Says Abides by UN and not US Sanctions on Iran

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday that her country will keep trading with Iran and Venezuela, adding it abided by sanctions imposed by the United Nations but not those imposed by any other country, such as those announced by the United States against Tehran.

"India follows only UN sanctions, and not unilateral sanctions by any country," she said at a joint news conference with her Iranian counterpart Mohammed Javad Zarif in New Delhi.

Swaraj said India would not make foreign policy "under pressure".

India and Iran have long-standing political and economic ties, with Iran one of India's top oil suppliers.

Zarif’s visit to India came after US President Donald Trump this month withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal and ordered the reimposition of US sanctions suspended under the 2015 accord.

Zarif is seeking to build support against the US rejection of the nuclear agreement.
