Despite being ranked as the second-best bowler in Test cricket at the moment, Ravichandran Ashwin is yet to bowl a single delivery for India in their ongoing series against England.
Ashwin has not been picked in any of the four Tests so far, with India and captain Virat Kohli preferring to go with four seamers and Ravindra Jadeja as the sole spinner.
The 34-year-old's last Test appearance was in the World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton, where he picked up 4-76, and his last first-class game saw him take 6-27 for Surrey at The Oval.
Explaining why India decided against picking Ashwin for the fourth Test, Kohli said: "England have four left-handers and we thought it is a good match-up for Ravindra Jadeja along with the seam bowlers. Plus the balance Jadeja gives us with the bat is important."
However, Ashwin's omission baffled a number of former players and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan has claimed that "there may be an issue with personalities and clashes".
Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, Vaughan said: "I am staggered. It has to be greatest non-selection we have ever witnessed across four Tests in the UK. It's madness.
"When a player of that quality, experience and know-how doesn't make a team four Tests into a five-match series, you have to start thinking there may be an issue with personalities and clashes.
"It may just be that the captain and Ravichandran Ashwin don't quite see eye to eye. It's the only excuse and reason why."
Former Australia spinner Shane Warne also questioned Ashwin's omission, telling Sky Sports: "I would have played Ashwin.
"It is going to turn here, you don't pick a side just for the first innings, it will turn. Plus, he's got five Test hundreds, you're playing a batsman as well as someone who can bowl."
