The latest findings of the Global Hunger Index were announced yesterday, revealing that India ranks 101 out of 116 countries, after ranking 94 among 107 countries last year.
Ranking behind its neighbours like Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal, India is classified as one of 31 countries where hunger is "serious". India also has "the highest child wasting rate of all countries" covered by the index, referring to children under the age of five with a low height for their age.
Given the alarming nature of these numbers, we checked to see how major English newspapers covered the index.
The Delhi edition of the Times of India had a two-column piece on the findings inside its front flap.
The Indian Express had a two-column report as well but on page 6.
Hindustan Times and the Telegraph did not include the index at all in their Delhi and Kolkata editions, respectively, while the Tribune had a short report on the last page of its Delhi-NCR edition. The Hindu gets a pass because the newspaper did not publish today due to a holiday for Ayudha Puja.
What did the newspapers have on their front pages instead, you ask? Aryan Khan's bail hearing continues to dominate the news cycle, as well as home minister Amit Shah's warning of "surgical strikes" to Pakistan.
