India records 22,775 new Covid-19 cases, 406 deaths; Omicron tally reaches 1,431

NEW DELHI: India logged 22,775 new Covid cases, 35 percent jump from yesterday while the active cases rose to 1,04,781 ,according to the Union health ministry data updated on Saturday.

There are 1,431 Omicron cases in India with 23 states reporting the new Covid-19 strain. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-affected state with 454 cases followed by Delhi, which has 351 infections.

The death toll climbed to 4,81,486 with 406 fresh fatalities according to the data updated at 8 am.

Several states across India reported a huge spike in Covid numbers on New Year’s eve. While Maharashtra reported fresh 8,067 cases of Covid-19, West Bengal and New Delhi reported 3,451 and 1,796 cases respectively.

The active cases comprise 0.30 per cent of the total infections, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate is at 98.32 per cent, the health ministry said.

An increase of 13,420 cases has been recorded in the active Covid-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

8,949 patients have recovered in the last 24 hours and the cumulative tally of recovered patients (since the beginning of the pandemic) is now at3,42,75,312.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.05 per cent.

The weekly positivity rate was also recorded at 1.10 per cent, according to the health ministry.

The testing capacity across the country continues to be expanded. The last 24 hours saw a total of 11,10,855tests being conducted. India has so far conducted over 67.89 crore (67,89,89,110) cumulative tests.

Meanwhile more than 151.70 crore(1,51,70,64,205) vaccine doses have been provided to States/UTs so far through Govt. of India (free of cost channel) and through direct state procurement category; and more than19.52 crore (19,52,96,356)balance and unutilized Covid Vaccine doses are still available with the States/UTs to be administered.

Moreover with the administration of 58,11,487vaccine doses in the last 24 hours, India’s Covid-19 vaccination coverage has exceeded145.16 crore (1,45,16,24,150) as per provisional reports till 7 am today. This has been achieved through 1,55,02,407sessions.
