India needs to reconsider booster dose policy: Top virologist Gagandeep Kang

HYDERABAD: India must reconsider its booster dose strategy in light of multiple variants of the novel coronavirus at play and private labs should be encouraged to carry out genome sequencing to identify the variant and threat levels better, a top virologist said on Monday.

Talking about the current vaccination drive, virologist Gagandeep Kang drew attention to the importance of having a practical vaccination plan, particularly in terms of precaution dose.

"Various studies in the United Kingdom have shown that the protection provided by the precaution dose drops within weeks... How long we can offer the precaution doses to the entire population, we need to look at this from a viability perspective as well," she said. According to Kang, Omicron provided significant relief during the pandemic as its caused mild infection.
