KOLHAPUR: The excise department has seized a consignment of India-made foreign liquor (IMFL) worth Rs 34 lakh that was meant for sale in Goa.
According to an official from the excise department, they got information from their sources that a consignment of alcohol from Goa is being transported in a multi-axle container. The sources also got the description of the vehicle and its registration number.
Accordingly, a checkpoint was set up along the Gandhinagar stretch of the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway that passes through Kolhapur city. When a vehicle matching the description came to the checkpoint, it was stopped. On being questioned, the truck’s driver — Anil Kadam, a native of Gevrai in Beed district — informed the police that he was transporting medicines.
Excise inspector Sambhaji Barage said, “We had strong information that the illegal transportation of the IMFL is taking place in a container vehicle. We removed the lock and found as many as 550 boxes of the liquor bottles which was worth about Rs 34 lakh. We are now investigating as to where the liquor was being taken to. We have arrested the driver and seized the container vehicle as well.”
