India legend Sourav Ganguly hospitalised after testing positive for Covid-19

Cricket legend Sourav Ganguly is being treated in a hospital in Kolkata for Covid-19.

Ganguly, who played 113 Test matches for India and was captain for 49 of them, fell ill on Sunday and tested positive the following day. He was admitted to hospital that same evening.

In January this year the 49-year-old, who now serves as the BCCI President, suffered a mild cardiac arrest which was later attributed to blocked arteries.

Later that month, he had to undergo a second angioplasty, and doctors confirmed afterwards that two stents had been placed.

According to Indian news agency PTI , those health complications prompted medical experts to advise him to seek hospital treatment, despite the fact he has been administered both doses of the vaccine against Covid-19.

"He received Monoclonal Antibody Cocktail therapy on the same night and is currently haemodynamically stable," PTI quoted Dr Rupali Basu, MD and CEO of Woodlands Hospital, as saying.

"A medical board comprising Dr Saroj Mondal, Dr Saptarshi Basu and Dr Soutik Panda in consultation with Dr Devi Shetty and Dr Aftab Khan is keeping a close watch on his health status."

Ganguly is said to be in a stable condition though, with ESPN Cricket reporting that family sources have said there is no immediate cause for alarm.

The 'God of the Off Side' is famed for being one of Indian cricket's most fierce leaders, with the side going from eighth to second in the ICC Test rankings under his tenure. The stylish left-hander finished his career having amassed more than 7,000 runs at an average of 42.17.

He also played 311 one-day internationals for India, being captain for 149 of them, and led his side to the 2003 World Cup final where they were beaten by Australia.

He racked up more than 11,300 runs in the white ball game, at an average of just over 41.

The news of Ganguly's positive test comes just after the Indian Government approved two more Covid-19 vaccines - Corbevax, Covovax- as well as anti-viral drug Molnupiravir for emergency use.

On Tuesday, the country's health ministry confirmed India had reported 6,358 Covid-19 cases and 293 deaths in the past 24 hours, with the Omicron tally in the country standing at 655.

In the UK, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that despite rising cases, there will be no additional restrictions in England before December 31.
