India hit by Covid scare as four isolate following head coach Ravi Shastri’s positive test

With seven days of their series against England remaining, India have suffered a Covid-19 scare, with four members of their backroom staff forced into isolation after Head Coach Ravi Shastri returned a positive lateral flow test.

Shastri’s lateral flow test on Saturday night, the third evening of the Fourth Test at the Kia Oval, was positive, so he and three close contacts are isolating as they await PCR results.

The close contacts are bowling coach Bharat Arun, fielding coach R.Sridhar and physio Nitin Patel. They returned negative lateral flows, as did the remainder of the squad – twice.

The four isolators did not travel to the Oval for the fourth day on Sunday morning, instead remaining in their hotel. BCCI honorary secretary described it as “a precautionary measure”.

There is no concern from the England camp, with the teams living in totally separate living environments and only interacting on the field of play.

The teams no longer live in fully incubated biosecure bubbles and are allowed to dine outside in small groups in the evening.
