India gets to grips with its media giants

India's politically influential media empires will be forced to restructure under proposed legislation designed to cut down to size the country's broadcasting monopolies. The long-awaited bill, a copy of which has been obtained by the Financial Times, will place the fast-growing broadcasting industry within a regulatory framework. The Zee group has already split itself into four in readiness for public flotation. Foreign broadcasters, such as Star, part of Rupert Murdoch's conglomerate, will also be affected by mandatory conditions to provide local content. (Via ft.com)
