India elections 2019: Caste divisions push Dalits to vote

India elections 2019: Caste divisions push Dalits to vote

Ancient class divisions among India's Hindus, known as the caste system, continue to be a source of hardship for millions of so-called lower-caste Hindus known as Dalits.

That is despite the caste system being outlawed more than 60 years ago.

In many areas, caste issues may make or break elections for political parties.

As the country votes in its general election, Dalit are once again turning to politics to make their voices heard.

Al Jazeera's Faiz Jamil reports from Saharanpur District, Uttar Pradesh, India.
