India: College professor prompts protests after saying 'women who don't wear hijab properly are tempting men like cut watermelon on display'

A college professor has prompted protests after he allegedly said women who didn’t wear the hijab “properly” were tempting men like a “cut watermelon on display”.

Professor Jouhar Munnavir was reportedly recorded hitting out at women who show skin in a leaked clip. He compared their apparent flashing of flesh from beneath a hijab to shop sellers who display a cut watermelon to tempt customers.

The clip allegedly reveals the social science professor at Farook Training College, India, complaining: “Eighty per cent of students are girls and a majority of them are Muslims.

“Although they wear a hijab, they expose some part of their chest, defeating the very purpose of wearing them. They expose like how we cut a slice of melon to see whether it is ripe or not.

“When you wear a hijab, you are supposed to cover your breasts because men find them most attractive in a woman. But what do they do? They only cover their head and show off a portion of their body."

He added: “In shops, people keep a cut watermelon on display so customers can come and choose what they want. That is how you [women] are also behaving.”

Furious students took to the streets in Kozhikode, Kerala, India, protesting his alleged comments.

They were allegedly made during a speech at a family counselling meeting.

Other women took to social media and posed topless, covering their breasts with watermelons, in response to his alleged comments.

Professor Munnavir has not responded to a request for comment.
