India celebrated Mother’s Day with 13,039 cakes an hour and Rs 1 lakh-plus dinners: Swiggy

India’s Mother’s Day celebrations translated into a sharp spike in food delivery and dining-out spending, with Swiggy reporting a 26.24% year-on-year rise in food delivery orders and a surge in premium restaurant bookings as consumers splurged on cakes and family dinners.

The company said cake deliveries emerged as the biggest driver of demand on May 10, with Swiggy dispatching an average of 13,039 cakes every hour across the country. Demand peaked between 7 pm and 8 pm, when nearly 30,000 cake orders were placed, including 636 orders in a single minute at 7:49 pm.

The data points to consumers increasingly treating occasions such as Mother’s Day as major spending events for both at-home celebrations and dining experiences, especially in metro cities and fast-growing tier-2 markets.

Bengaluru and Mumbai together accounted for close to 60,000 cake orders, while cities such as Patna and Dehradun also recorded strong demand. In one of the larger bulk orders, a customer in Dindigul ordered 15 honey cakes, while another in Patna purchased eight baked cheesecakes.

Premium dining drives bigger bills

The sharpest jump came from restaurant reservations through Swiggy Dineout, where fine-dining bookings rose 71.8% from a year ago. Overall Dineout reservations increased 30.1%, according to the company.

Bengaluru recorded the highest number of diners nationally, followed by Delhi and Hyderabad. Among emerging markets, Ahmedabad led in diner traffic, ahead of Jaipur and Chandigarh.

The spending appetite was visible in high-value restaurant bills as well. A Bengaluru customer spent Rs 1.12 lakh through Swiggy Dineout, the highest single bill recorded on the platform on Mother’s Day. Another diner in Varanasi spent more than Rs 1.06 lakh on a single booking.

Swiggy said customers collectively saved more than Rs 6.9 crore through Dineout offers during the day, reflecting how discounts and app-led promotions continue to drive restaurant traffic despite rising discretionary spending.

The celebrations began shortly after midnight, with the first cake order of the day being placed in Hyderabad at 12:04 am, the company said.
