India and Pakistan announce agreement to ‘stop all firing and military action’

Foreign secretary Vikram Misri announced this evening that both India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire.

In a press conference held at 6 pm, Misri said the Director General of Military Operations of Pakistan called his counterpart in India at 3.35 pm today. “It was agreed between them that both sides would stop all firing and military action on land and in the air and sea with effect from 17.00 IST today,” he said. “Instructions have been given on both sides to give effect to this understanding. The Directors Generals of Military Operations will talk again on May 12 at 12 pm.”

Misri took no questions.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting tweeted soon after that the “stoppage of firing & military action between India and Pakistan was worked out directly between the two countries”. It also said there “is no decision to hold talks on any other issue at any other place”.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also tweeted that India and Pakistan had “worked out an understanding on stoppage of firing and military action”.

Shortly before the press conference, US President Donald Trump had claimed the United States had mediated a “long night of talks” between both countries.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio tweeted that he and Vice-President JD Vance had “engaged with senior Indian and Pakistani officials”.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also tweeted that India and Pakistan “have agreed to a ceasefire with immediate effect”.

These developments come after India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terrorist attack that killed 26 people on April 22. Read our coverage of the operation here.
