Independiente pay Scotland tribute as Argentines salute their roots with saltire kit

Argentinian giants Independiente have paid tribute to their Scottish roots with a new third kit that features a huge saltire across the chest.

Los Diablos Rojos are one of the most successful teams in Argentina, with 16 top flight titles to their name and seven Copa Libertadores.

They're also a club with Scottish roots thanks to pioneer Alexander Watson Hutton.

Hutton founded the first Argentine football league, the first champions of which were St. Andrew's Athletic Club, founded by expats from Scotland .

St Andrew's won the title in the 1891 season and when Independiente were founded in 1905 they adopted the colours of the Scots team.

President Arístides Langone had the team play in dark blue, while the club badge was a saltire with I.F.C for Independiente Football Club.

These days they play in red shirts but the club have not forgotten their historic links with Scotland.

A new kit has been released reflecting their original badge and colours, with the cross of St Andrew emblazoned across the chest.

Famous names to play for Independiente include Jorge Burruchaga, who won the World Cup with Argentina in 1986 and Raimundo Orsi who won the Copa America with Argentina in 1928 before switching allegiances to Italy and winning the 1934 World Cup.

Scotland have played Argentina four times in international matches, with one win, one draw and two defeats.

The last meeting came in 2008 when a team managed by Diego Maradona took a 1-0 win at Hampden.
