Fans watching last night’s (8 February) Independent Spirit Awards were confused after a clip circulating on social media showed a man delivering awards while holding on to his sandwich.
The moment was actually part of a skit inspired by Hustlers and J Lo’s awful “sandwich-eating boss”, Mark, which appeared to fall apart due to a mixup on stage.
Aubrey Plaza announced that she was going to bring out Jon Glaser as the show's ambassador, but had to repeat the bit before a clip aired showing an interaction between Glaser and Lopez’s character.
In the scene, J-Lo's boss chews on a sandwich while being reluctant to give her the time off work so she can pick her daughter up from school.
Mark the sandwich guy (Jon Glaser) then came onto the stage with a sandwich, mumbled into the microphone and exited the stage.
He also delivered a statuette when the award for Best Supporting Actress (won by Zhao Shuzhen for The Farewell) was being announced.
Twitter user Bunklore was among those to be confused by the moment and tweeted a clip with the caption: “The guy delivering statues at the Independent Spirit Awards didn’t bother to put down his sandwich before coming onstage.”
