Journalists on the Independent newspaper will strike on Budget day in a dispute over pay. Members of the National Union of Journalists on the paper, and its sister title, the Independent on Sunday, will walk out for 24 hours next Wednesday in protest at a 2.5% wage offer.
The NUJ's general secretary, Jeremy Dear, said: "Senior managers at Independent Newspapers tell the City how well they are doing and tell the public of the success of the new paper, yet they tell staff they cannot afford to increase their pay offer."
Union officials will meet management this week to try to avert the strike.
