AN independent councillor has been elected to the Highland Council after a by-election.
Sammy Cameron, an independent who was one of eight candidates who contested the vacancy, has been elected to represent Ward 11– Caol and Mallaig,
Voters went to the poll on Thursday and the by-election count was held this morning.
Voting was by the single transferable vote and Sammy Cameron emerged as the winner at stage 8 of the count.
The turnout was 33%.
Ward 11 is a 3-member ward and Sammy Cameron will join fellow ward members John Grafton (Scottish Liberal Democrats) and Liz Saggers (Scottish Conservative and Unionist) in representing the ward.
The by-election was called after a Green councillor resigned.
Andrew Baldrey, who represented Caol and Mallaig on Highland Council, stepped down from the local authority.
