Indecent images mechanic was caught with second sickening stash just 11 days after walking free

He was spared jail for a haul of indecent images of children - but within days of walking free from court on a suspended sentence Alan Paterson was found with another vile collection.

The shamed mechanic was in court last October for using a social media app to access 195 indecent pictures and extreme pornography, involving animals.

But when police went to his home to carry out their first post sentence check on the pervert 11 days later, they found more him to be in possession of more illegal filth.

He lied that the only electronic storage device he had was a mobile phone but the officer found a memory stick in a first aid box near his bed which contained 1,201 indecent images, including eight hours of movies.

Newcastle Crown Court heard he was on bail for the original offences when he downloaded the second sickening stash.

Judge Robert Spragg sentenced Paterson to a total of 16 months behind bars with 10 years on the sex offenders' register and 10 year sexual harm prevention order.

The judge told him: "You were supposed to tell police of any storage devices you had.

"You said you only had a telephone, that was a lie and a breach of the sexual harm prevention order.

"You were given every opportunity when they arrived to hand over anything and you said you didn't have anything. That was simply not true.

Judge Spragg said "loneliness" could have contributed to Paterson's offending.

But the judge told him: "You were told what would happen if you committed further offences."

Prosecutor John Hobley told the court 92 of the images were in category A, the most serious of their type and included eight hours of movies.

A total of 90 of the images were in category B and 1,019 were in the least serious category and one movie involved extreme pornography.

Paterson, 50, of Hylton Court, Washington, admitted breach of a sexual harm prevention order by failing to surrender the device to police when asked and three charges of making indecent photographs of children.

He also admitted possessing extreme pornography and breach of a suspended sentence.

Mr Hobley told the court: "The defendant had been on bail, pending sentence, when the images were created.

"This was the first inspection visit, the first opportunity he had to breach that part of the order."

Graeme Cook, defending, said "skilled mechanic" Paterson, who was a MOT tester and manager had made progress with the probation service and had finally started to "open up" about his problems and respond to the help he needs.

Mr Cook said Paterson had had "repercussions" as a result of his conviction has year and had people coming to his door and causing damage to his property.
