IND vs SA, 1st Test: Dean Elgar, Marco Jansen put South Africa on top vs India

NEW DELHI: Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen formed a formidable partnership, propelling South Africa's lead on the third day of the opening Test against India at SuperSport Park in Centurion.

At lunch, South Africa stood at 392 for seven, boasting a first innings lead of 147 runs.

Elgar, advancing from an overnight score of 140 to a commendable 185, was dismissed after nicking a catch down the leg side off Shardul Thakur.

During a two-hour stint, Elgar and Jansen (who remained unbeaten at 72) deftly navigated the extended morning's play, ultimately concluding after Elgar's 287-ball innings embellished with 28 boundaries.

This pair elevated South Africa from a slim 11-run advantage at the outset to a commanding position of authority.

Collaborating effectively, Elgar and Jansen amassed 111 runs for the sixth wicket.

They successfully weathered a challenging period under fading light on Wednesday and fended off the threats posed by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, both at the commencement of play and later when confronted with the second new ball.

The towering Jansen not only achieved his second Test half-century but also attained his highest score to date, facing 120 deliveries and striking nine boundaries along with a six.
