'Incredibly proud' Lynden Gooch wins League One Goal of the Month award

Lynden Gooch says he is incredibly proud after his match-winning strike against MK Dons was voted League One Goal of the Month for January.

With Sunderland desperately seeking a winner at Stadium MK, Gooch stepped up in the 79th minute with a wonderful long-range effort on his unfavoured left foot to seal three important points for the Black Cats.

And those points also went towards helping Gooch's manager Phil Parkinson win the EFL League One Manager of the Month award too.

Decided by the public, the American's curling effort received 62% of votes to bag the award, and cap an excellent month for Sunderland with Chris Maguire also nominated for Player of the Month.

Reacting to the award, Gooch said: “It is an incredibly proud moment for me. It was a great goal and a big one for the team – it’s always nice to score a goal like that. but even better when it’s one that gets you three points.

“The goal only came about because I was trying to create something out of nothing, but fortunately it went in. Afterwards, it was just chaos with all the fans and the lads, but it was a great moment.”

The forward beat Lincoln City’s Jorge Grant and Fleetwood Town’s Lewie Coyle to win the award.
