'Incredibly frustrated' cyclist says residents are purposely blocking people from their road

Residents in a Bristol street have denied moving roadblocks and traffic cones to keep people out.

Avon Crescent near the harbourside has been closed for several months, as part of Bristol City Council's repairs to Cumberland Road and the Chocolate Path.

Rows of roadblocks are in place to stop vehicles from entering, with small gaps allowing pedestrians and bike riders to pass.

A cyclist has now claimed gaps are being repeatedly blocked to prevent access, accusing residents of being to blame.

However, one resident dismissed this as "rubbish" and said it was more likely the council or contractors who had been moving things about.

Posting on the FixMyStreet problem-reporting website, the anonymous cyclist said: "Residents and pedestrians have taken to moving the cones and road blockings to stop cyclists being able to legally pass though Avon Crescent through towards Spike Island, which is both dangerous and incredibly frustrating.

"This has been happening on a regular basis since Avon Crescent was shut. It means cyclists are having to stop on the wrong side of the road to move cones and bollards to pass though, increasing the risk of an accident.

"Residents have also been spray painting the roads in an attempt to police people, confusing pedestrians."

Bristol Live reported in April how residents had sprayed their own social distancing markers on the road, reminding pedestrians and runners to keep two metres apart.

It would appear tensions along the road are still running high, as a large handmade sign has also been propped up on the traffic island.

Along with a drawing of what appears to be a chest, it states in large capital letters: "WHAT PART OF 'ROAD CLOSED' DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND??"

The cardboard sign has been attached to the back of a road sign with cable ties and remained in place today (Friday), although it is not clear how long it has been there for.

There is also a message written across the width of the pavement, stating: "NO ADULT BIKES."

The cyclist's complaint was posted on July 26, and the council has since responded: "This enquiry has been referred to another team for action.

"They will provide further updates on the issue in due course."

Another passer-by tweeted about the road in June, describing it as "very aggressively signposted and not very welcoming at all."

'It's rubbish'

However, Bristol Live spoke to a resident who denied that people living in the street have anything to do with the complaint.

The man, who asked not to be named, said he was frustrated too as a fellow cyclist.

He added: "The [Chocolate Path] contractors come down regularly and move things around, they are clearly monitoring it.

"Residents haven't got anything to do with it, it's rubbish."

He said the situation had "obviously been causing friction" but that the sign pictured above was not representative of how all residents feel.

He added: "It's not helpful, I don't think they should have done that."

He said there had been issues with drivers being unaware of the closure and finding they had to turn around in the middle of the road.
