Incredibles 2 shatters records with $180m box office opening

Disney-Pixar's Incredibles 2 is already smashing box office records.

The superpowered sequel opened to a whopping $180 million, making it the biggest debut of all time for an animated film. A title previously held by another Pixar sequel, 2016's Finding Dory, which opened to $135 million.

The film also now stands as the eight-biggest domestic opening of all time, reports Variety, as well as surpassing last year's Beauty and the Beast remake, which opened $174.6 million to become the best debut of a PG-rated film.

Overseas, Incredibles 2 earned $51.5 million, totalling to a global debut of $231.5 million, with the film opening in 26% of the international market - it isn't set to debut in the UK until 13 July due to the World Cup.

The original film, released in 2004, debuted to $70.5 million, which at the time marked the second-largest opening for an animated feature. It went on to earn a total of $633 worldwide, while bagging an Oscar for Best Animated Feature along the way.

Incredibles 2 has also received unanimously positive reviews from critics, with many praising the character arches, powerful messages, and an awe-inspiring set-piece featuring a runaway train.

The Brad Bird-directed sequel sees Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) recruited by businessman Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk) to help “bring supers back into the sunlight”, with her as the new poster-child.

That leaves Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson) to stay at home to look after Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack – the baby who everyone is now realising has umpteen superpowers.

Incredibles 2 hits UK cinemas 13 July.
