Incredible video captures huge humpback whale nicknamed 'Barney' in Firth of Forth

A huge humpback whale has returned to the Firth of Forth, leaving whale watchers from Edinburgh and the Lothians desperate to catch a glimpse.

Known as Barney, the humpback whale has visited the area previously, but made a return in recent days when he was spotted by local woman Lyndsay McNeill.

Lyndsay, who runs a Facebook group which tracks whales around Scotland, said it was a "dream come true" to have captured Barney on camera in the Forth.

Barney was named after the barnacle of his dorsal fin, and was spotted in earlier in February too - so he is no stranger to the area.

Lyndsay McNeill at the Scottish Humpback ID helps to track Barney's visits to the Forth alongside those of other whales alongside a team of volunteer whale watchers.

In the video shared by Lyndsay, Barney can be seen blowing water from his blowhole as he briefly appears on the surface of the water before diving back under.

She made the sighting just off Inchmickery, a small island in the middle of the Forth.

Previous reports explain as least at two other whales have also been spotted in the area of Berwick recently, with local fisherman saying they may have even ventured close to shore.

The powerful mammals can grow to 60 feet in length and are known to feed in colder waters, however the re-sighting of Barney is thought to be unusual.

In 2015 a rare pod of killer whales was even spotted, with the orcas likely hunting for seals. But Lyndsay has previously explained the animals in the Forth are more suited to the humpback whales diet.

"We have a lot of sand eels, sprat and herring in the Forth, which is what their diet is here," she told the BBC.
