'Incredible' swarm of bees spotted on bike saddle at the harbourside

A swarm of bees was spotted on a bike saddle at the habourside on Monday afternoon (June 1).

Millie Hughes-Rodgers discovered the insects at around 4pm while walking along Museum Street.

The 30-year-old, from Whitehall, quickly posted on Facebook's Bristol Nature Network for assistance - and was flooded with offers of help.

A bee keeper arrived within the hour and safely removed the huge swarm from the area.

"I thought 'oh wow, how fascinating' and I wasn’t scared at all, " said Millie. "It was an incredible sight. I feel like people have more of an acceptance of bees now that there is an awareness of their decrease in population."

Why do bee swarms appear?

Swarms are normally spotted in May but can still be seen in June.

The phenomenon happens when bees leave their hive to find somewhere new to live. It's very rare for a swarm to attack because they fill themselves with honey before they begin their journey which makes them docile.

If you spot a swarm, contact your local beekeeper’s association for help.
