Incredible scenes in Liverpool city centre as thousands of Reds partied into the early hours

Liverpool is the best city in the world.

We already knew that.

Yet there are times when it really is extra special. And was one of them.

The city's nightlife is famed around the globe - but last night was like no other.

In the aftermath of another win that will be etched into the history of an already historic club, , splintering into groups and holding spontaneous street parties.

From North John Street to Church Street to Hanover Street the night was a heady cocktail of Anfield anthems, pyrotechnics and dreams come true.

The air was heavy with smoke, the flares seemed to emerge from everywhere - typically held aloft by New Balance shirted Redmen sat on the shoulders of best mates, strangers, whoever could summon the strength.

You would be dazzled by the flashbulb of a a press photographer then turn into the glare of a freshly lit flare.

Flags were waved high above the crowds and scarves twisted as the chorus of Allez, Allez, Allez , the soundtrack to two incredible years of Champions League football, bellowed from one congregation to the next.

A group of Dutch fans from Amsterdam asked to have their picture taken with the Sir John and Cecil Moores statues outside Primark. Strangers from Newcastle stopped in the street after recognising eachother from the bus down.

Hen parties , some passionate Reds drinking in the atmosphere, others trying to stay together as they wondered through celebrations bigger than the bride's biggest day will ever be.

Car horns beeped as fans poured from the Exhibition Centre on the Waterfront, where thousands watched the final on a screen bigger than a mansion, across the Strand and into town.

There they threatened to disappear into the streets of Liverpool ONE, the choice of avenues causing groups to filter in different directions.

But they would reunite in spontaneous gatherings in random places.

Hundreds burst into song outside Forever 21. A drummer emerged from nowhere. People battled to get in front of any camera filming, whoever was holding it. I am the happiest. No me!

In Central Station fans gave up on the last trains home, choosing instead to create a party outside Sainsbury's . More flags, more scarves, more Allez, Allez, Allez.

- as it had been in the hours before kick off when so many fans filled so much of the city centre that a swathe of roads had to be closed to traffic.

There the flares lit up the sky, the air filled with the taste of burning and the sound of love letters to Mo Salah, Gini Wijnaldum and every other hero that had written their name into Anfield folklore.

Everyone was smiling. Police officers laughed with fans who laughed with tourists who laughed with locals. Everyone was smiling. Everyone was happy.

By 12.30am it was raining, by 1am it was pouring.

Yet fans continued to mill through the streets, congratulating at each other , posing for selfies that would take hours to load on social media and sharing the magic of possessing Big Ears for the sixth time.

Spirits weren't dampened by the rain - how could they be? The only thing challenged by the weather last night was the blaze of the few flares yet to be lit by 1am.
