Parts of west of England underwater after days of downpours

Incredible aerial images taken on Sunday show Worcester and nearby towns and villages underwater, with cars stranded on impassable roads.

The River Avon, Severn and Teme have all burst their banks after days of downpours across the region.

More than a dozen roads remain closed on Monday.

The River Avon in Evesham reached its highest level since 2007 last week, flooding homes and businesses nearby.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said they rescued around 100 people in just 24 hours.

Many of those rescues involved pulling people from cars left stranded in deep floodwater.

Although a number of flood warnings are no longer in force, three remain in effect around Worcester as of Monday morning.

All have been issued for points along the River Severn.

Despite the warnings, the Worcestershire County Council said conditions were improving on Sunday evening.

They said the river levels were dropping in some areas, but rising in others and inspectors were on the ground to monitor the situation.

"In terms of weather, we are expecting some intermittent heavy showers, before it turns colder and drier until the middle of next week," they added.

"Tonight we are seeing a much improving picture in terms of flooding across the county, and there are no further issues in Worcester, Powick and Bransford," a spokesperson said.
