'Tornado'-shaped cloud forms over Nottinghamshire

These fascinating pictures show a tornado-shaped cloud forming above Nottinghamshire.

Joe Clarke managed the spectacle from Collingham on Wednesday, May 12, and told Nottinghamshire Live he spotted the formation in the sky as he nipped to the shop.

The county has experienced violent lightning and thunder storms this week, and the Met Office has predicted more rain later on.

The images sent in to Nottinghamshire Live show what is know as a funnel cloud, or 'tuba', according to the Met Office.

These are spinning fingers of cloud that are very much the precursor formation of a tornado.

If the funnel touches the ground it is then, officially, classed as a tornado.

The Met Office says: "A funnel cloud is a cone-shaped cloud which extends from the base of a cloud towards the ground without actually reaching the surface.

"In the UK they often look like thin dangling bits of rope, hanging from the cloud above.

"But in hot-spots such as tornado alley in the USA, funnel clouds can sometimes be thicker and much more intense.

"A rotating column of wind draws in cloud droplets, making a region of intense low pressure visible.

"They are formed in the same way as a tornado building around this localised area of intensely low pressure and are typically associated with the formation of cumulonimbus thunderclouds."

According to the forecaster, around 30-35 tornadoes are formed in the UK every year.
