Incredible moment Max Verstappen met Michael Schumacher as a kid - as he wins first Formula One title

Max Verstappen today became a Formula One champion for the first time - and in doing so stopped Lewis Hamilton from beating Michael Schumacher's title record.

The Dutchman won in incredible circumstances with Mercedes and Hamilton currently appealing the way the race ended.

But the win has seen a lovely moment where Max Verstappen and Michael Schumacher embraced when Max was just a kid and Schumacher was at the peak of his powers.

Today however, Max Verstappen struggled to contain his emotions after becoming F1 world champion in sensational fashion at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

The Dutchman went into the race level on points with Lewis Hamilton, and his hopes of a maiden world title appeared to be fading when with five laps to go, he trailed the Mercedes man by 10 seconds and appeared to have little chance of making up the deficit.

However, it was then that Williams driver Nicholas Latifi prompted a wild finale when he careered into the barriers, prompting race officials to order a safety car.

Having pitted twice already, and with nothing to lose, Verstappen changed tyres a third time but it seemed futile when race control instructed that lapped cars could not overtake the safety car until it left the track - meaning the 24-year-old would have to get through several cars to reach Hamilton on the final lap.

Those instructions were then controversially altered though, setting up a thrilling final lap during which Verstappen passed Hamilton and then held him off before releasing his emotions over team radio as he took the chequered flag.

He'd calmed down by the time he spoke to reporters track-side, fighting back tears as he said "It's unbelievable. Throughout the whole race I kept fighting and then there was the opportunity in the last lap. It's insane.

"I don't know what to say. I'm so pleased for the team and for all these guys. I love working with them so much.

"Finally today I had a bit of luck. My team know I love them and I want to do this with them for the next 10 or 15 years!"

While much of the focus centred around whether Hamilton, 36, would take a record-breaking eighth crown, Verstappen has now also cemented his place in history being the first

Dutch driver to take the title.
