Incredible moment massive humpback whale swims close to tourist boat in Cornwall

A group nature lovers were given an amazing treat after a giant humpback whale swam incredibly close to their boat.

The giant creature, thought to be 15 metres long, was spotted off the coast of Cornwall during a wildlife watching trip.

And after the vessel's engines were turned off the whale then came even closer before swimming beneath the craft.

Marine Discovery Penzance co-owner Hannah Jones said it was not the first time she had seen one in the area, but insisted it was "by far the best encounter we've had".

Hannah, originally from Llantwit Major, added: "The water was really calm and really clear and in the distance I saw a surge of white water and a mass behind it."

Hannah said the group was on a wildlife watching trip on Friday when they first caught sight of it in the distance.

"We motored slowly over and it turned out to be a humpback feeding on sand eels," Hannah said.

"We were watching it feed with the engines off and it just came toward us and kept coming and then dived down."

"It was a bit of a high-octane moment. We've never seen anything like that."

Hannah, who is in her fifteenth season with the company, said she has only spotted humpbacks on four other occasions.
