Incredible moment dog rescued from water pipe after being stuck for nearly a day

This is the moment a pet dog was rescued from a water pipe after getting trapped for nearly 24 hours while chasing a rat.

Terrier Olive followed the rodent during a walk and disappeared in the Cowley area of Oxford.

Unable to find her that day or the following morning, her owner called up Thames Water and asked for help.

Engineers James Lewis and Jack Gale - more used to clearing fatbergs - were then dispatched to the scene to clear the unusual blockage.

James initially tried to crawl up the pipe himself but found it too narrow so the pair set about lifting manhole covers to try and find Olive.

The dog was discovered wet and muddy but otherwise fit and healthy two hours later.

James said: "We’ve both got dogs ourselves so it was such an emotional moment to get her out.

"I had a lump in my throat. It was a fantastic feeling as we’d both worked really hard. We also had to be 100 per cent professional.

"If we’d shown fear or anxiety, that would’ve made the situation a lot worse for the owner.

"Olive was bouncing around with excitement when she was finally free, it made our day.

"Her owner had a tear in her eye, she was so thankful, so relieved. She said she hadn’t slept all night."

Karen Nelson, regional network manager for Thames Water, praised the duo.

He said: "Our Thames Valley team has worked so hard over the last five months during unprecedented wet weather to protect our customers from flooding and protect the environment.

"I am so grateful to James and Jack, and so proud of every member of the team and what we achieve every day."

It comes just months after a heroic dog walker pulled a drowning Belgian shepherd from a river.

Jane Harper was walking along the banks of the River Trent in Farndon, Nottinghamshire when she spotted a dog in the water.

At first she thought the pooch was dead until she saw the animal blinking, prompting her to hand her dogs to her friend Joanne Bellamy and jump in.

The quick thinking woman realised the dog wasn't coming out of the river because she was tied to a rock, so she rested her head on a rock so she could breathe.

At that point, a second dog owner came in to help and pulled the dog onto the grass, wrapping her in a jumper.
