Incredible moment couple get engaged during karaoke at legendary Stockport pub

This is the amazing moment a happy couple got engaged at a legendary Stockport karaoke pub.

The Chestergate, on Mersey Square, has had its fair share of extraordinary sights. The boozer is incredibly popular with locals for not only for its sub-£3 pints but also its karaoke.

It’s common for the song requests to pile up by 5pm on a weeknight — but what happened at the pub earlier this week is certainly rare. A video posted by the watering hole on Tuesday (April 25) shows the moment a happy couple decided to tie the knot.

Holding the microphone, a nervy soon-to-be groom-to-be can be heard telling his partner that he ‘loves her so much’. As he does so, punters can be heard shouting ‘go on brother!’ and ‘get on with it!’.

As he continues to speak, the pub is hushed quiet so he can continue. Getting down on one knee, there are screams of delight — before he pops the all-important question.

“Will you marry me?,” he asks. And, in less than a second, she is nodding her head in agreement.

That prompts more cheers from the crowd and smiles and tears from the couple.

That reaction will come as no surprise to Steph Armstrong, 34, the landlady. When Diane Bourne visited for the MEN in October of last year for a spot of karaoke, she said it was a ‘community pub’.

“There's quite a lot of regulars here, they're just a really lovely bunch,” Steph said. “It's like a little community pub, they're all friends and there's a lovely atmosphere where everyone sings and dances and feels safe and happy."

And that community spirit was on show for Diane, who took the microphone to sing ‘A Little Respect’ by Erasure — to the delight of regulars. “One bloke even asked to shake my hand afterwards and said "credit where it's due",” she recalled. “I don't think I've ever felt so appreciated as a human in my whole adult life.”

Now, The Chestergate’s welcome has provided the perfect spot to pop the question. Congratulations to the happy couple from the Manchester Evening News.
