Incredible moment Cleo Smith, 4, rescued in police raid on stranger's home after 'abduction' three weeks ago

This is the dramatic moment a four-year-old girl was rescued more than two weeks after she was suspected to have been snatched during a family camping trip in Australia.

Police found Cleo Smith in a house in the coastal town of Carnarvon and a man was taken into custody following an early morning raid, Western Australia Police Deputy Commissioner Col Blanch confirmed.

She had disappeared with her sleeping bag from her family's tent at the Blowholes Campground, 47 miles north of the family home in Carnarvon, north of Perth, on October 16.

In video footage, captioned by Western Australia Police as 'the moment Cleo was rescued,' little Cleo Smith can be seen in an officer's arms being carried out to safety.

Another officer then speaks to the child who appears calm and nods her head.

The first words of the missing four-year-old upon her being miraculously found by police "alive and well" were: "My name is Cleo".

She was reunited with her mother Ellie Smith and stepfather Jake Gliddon soon after.

Her relieved mum said on Instagram: "Our family is whole again."

Cleo's disappearance had sparked a frantic search, which came to an end when officers broke into a home and found Cleo in one of the rooms.

Police said a man had been taken into custody following the 1am raid at an address just under 50 miles from the campsite.

Detectives had previously said they believed Cleo had been abducted.

Cleo disappeared between 1.30am and 6am on the second day of a camping trip with her parents and younger sister Isla.

The children had been in a compartment of the tent separate from the parents.

Police suspected she had been abducted because a zipper on a tent flap had been raised to a height that she could not have reached.

Forensic scientists had examined the exterior of the family home for evidence that a predator had stalked Cleo and attempted to break in.

Deputy commissioner Col Blanch said: "It’s my privilege to announce that in the early hours of this morning, the Western Australia police force rescued Cleo Smith. Cleo is alive and well."

A picture was also released of her recovering at hospital, seen smiling, waving and clutching an ice lolly in a hospital bed.

It was posted on Facebook by Australian police with the caption: "The miracle we all hoped for."

Detective Sergeant Blaine was one of four police officers who entered the room where Cleo was found.

"It was shock to start with," he said of the moment he saw her safe and well.

"Quickly followed by elation. That could have been any one of the team, but it turned out I was of four guys that were fortunate enough to go through that door and make that rescue."

"We had always hoped for that outcome, but were not prepared for it, but it was absolutely fantastic to see her sitting there in the way that she was. It was incredible."

Australian PM Scott Morrison tweeted it was "wonderful, relieving news".

Commissioner Dawson said: "I think Australia is rejoicing."

"To find a little girl - a vulnerable little girl - after 18 days. You know, obviously people think the worst, but importantly hope was never lost," he added.

Deputy Commissioner Blanch said finding the information that led them to Cleo was like looking "for a needle in a haystack".

"Late last night they found that needle that led them to that address and rescued Cleo," he told Network Seven.

Police said it involved information about a car, but would not elaborate.
