Incredible moment cheeky shark pinches fisherman's catch off Scottish coast

This is the incredible moment a fisherman loses his dinner to a cheeky shark off the southwest coast of Scotland.

Stuart Ritchie was out on his kayak in Luce Bay, Wigtownshire, around 2pm on Monday when he felt a tug at the end his line.

Reeling in what was sure to be a tasty dinner, the 36-year-old was about to bring the fish on board when, out of nowhere, a tope shark popped up and made off with his catch.

In a video, the Kilwinning native is shocked at first, before seeing the funny side and laughing at his misfortune. He then tells viewers: "Oh well, that'll be a shark attack!"

But despite losing out on a meal, the keen angler was delighted to have caught the rare encounter on film.

Speaking to The Record, he said: "It just came up out of the water and I didn't see it till the last minute.

"Before I properly realised what was going on, it had already snatched the fish off the end of my rod and was off back down into the water with my meal!

"I come out on my kayak to fish here a lot, especially for tope sharks. The south west of Scotland is a bit of a hotspot for them.

"But it's pretty rare for them to steal fish off a line. It's just one of these things you never see, maybe in tropical waters, but you don't usually see them near the surface."

Tope sharks can grow up to two metres in length and are often spotted in Scottish bays during the summer before making their annual migration to places such as Portugal, the Canary Islands and even northern Iceland.

The animal is protected in Scotland and has to put back into the water after being caught.

And although Stuart, a navigator in the Merchant Navy, often goes out looking for them, it's not uncommon to go long periods of time on the water without seeing much action.

As well as being a keen angler, Stuart is never without his GoPro camera while on his kayak in case the opportunity arises to film a catch.

He added: "I've been fishing for about six years and try to record everything I do.

"It's quite a difficult thing to film, as there's so much waiting around. But when I do get some action, I will edit it altogether and stick it up on my YouTube channel for some enjoyable viewing."
