Incredible light installation coming to Bristol city centre next week

A stunning light installation is coming to Bristol next week, adding to the array of Christmas lights dotted around the city.

Submergence is an immersive, walkthrough experience created by digital arts group Squidsoup, whose installations have featured at music and light festivals all over the world.

Fans of music producer Four Tet will be aware of Squidsoup's work, as the artist used one of their installations on his most recent tour, which included performances at Alexandra Palace in London and the Sydney Opera House.

Speaking about Submergence, a Squidsoup spokesperson said: "The installation transforms space into a hybrid environment where virtual and physical worlds coincide.

"As you enter the piece, you are walking into a space occupied by both real and virtual components, and you can affect both.

"The piece moves through several movements, creating a semi-linear 12 minute piece.

"In its entirety, an abstract narrative is formed with a gradual increase in tension, building to a final climax. Each movement has its own elements, atmosphere and responsiveness.

"They are also all open to one’s own interpretation."

Squidsoup will be installed in Millennium Square and will form part of festive pop-up The Square, which is also home to an Apres Ski Bar, roller skating venue and more.

It launches on Wednesday, December 11 and will be free to visit.

Submergence's latest incarnation is a gradual development of the original Submergence, first created in 2013.

It has been displayed in more than 40 spaces and events on six continents, including Canary Wharf in London, Burning Man Festival in Nevada, USA and Visual Art Week in Mexico.

Jon Ojo of The Square said: "We couldn't be happier to add Submergence to the long list of things to do at The Square.

"The free light show is sure to draw people's attention and add a completely unique addition for us and Bristol as a city.

"I can’t wait for it to be set up and see what it looks like. The added colour and fun it will bring is priceless."
