Incredible fundraiser in memory of seven-year-old Emily Jones raises more than £25k

A fundraiser set up in the memory of schoolgirl Emily Jones has raised a huge £25,000.

People are still donating to the campaign - set up more than eight months ago - in an effort to support Bolton Lads & Girls Club, a charity which offers activities for young people across the town.

The fundraiser was created by Sarah Barnes, Emily's mother, and is still receiving support, with over 1,100 people already giving money to the cause and many adding their own tributes and messages.

Emily loved playing tennis and was learning to swim and ride horses, her mum wrote in the description of the campaign.

"As a family, we do not want Emily’s name to be in vain," Miss Barnes wrote.

"Emily was fortunate, in that she had the support and love of family and friends during her life. Emily was extremely sporty and adventurous, with so much energy.

"She packed so much into her short life. Emily loved to play tennis, she had swimming lessons, learned to horse ride. Nothing fazed Emily at all, and as such she looked forward to visiting the climbing walls in Keswick and loved hiking.

"Not all children have the support Emily enjoyed, or the opportunities she had. Emily would have loved to help others and Bolton Lads and Girls Club provide the perfect opportunity to help children achieve their goals and provide much needed support."

Emily died after she was attacked by Eltiona Skana in Queen's Park, Bolton, on March 22, a trial was told last week.

The 30-year-old had been suffering from paranoid schizophrenia and was sentenced to a life sentence, with a minimum of eight years in prison, after pleading guilty to manslaughter with diminished responsibility at an earlier hearing.
