'Incredible' former Newcastle defender gives 'big mention' to fans after deadline-day exit

Federico Fernandez has shared a fond farewell to Newcastle United after completing a deadline-day exit to Elche. The former Argentina international brought a four-year stay on Tyneside to an end with a move to the La Liga side on Thursday.

Fernandez made 89 appearances for the Magpies after joining from Swansea City and scored twice. The veteran centre-back also captained the club on several occasions in the absence of Jamaal Lascelles.

Fernandez was a first-team regular under both Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce, but saw his opportunities limited under Eddie Howe last season. The former Napoli star only made two appearances under the current head coach, but his influence behind the scenes during the club's successful bid for survival was described as 'incredible'.

Fernandez was one of several fringe players to depart on deadline day, and the 33-year-old has reportedly signed a one-year deal with Elche. The centre-back has now taken to social media to bid farewell to the Toon Army, and wish his former team-mates the best for the remainder of the campaign.

He posted: "It’s been a pleasure to wear the Newcastle colours. I had a great time at the club, I want to thank all the people behind the scenes that since day 1 they were amazing with me and my family.

"Big mention to the fans that make this club such an important one. To the players and staff the best of luck for the season ahead."
