Incredible footage shows huge 'atomic bomb' cloud over lake in Hungary

This is the incredible moment a huge "atomic bomb" cloud was seen looming over a lake in Hungary.

The spectacular phenomenon, understood to be a "wet microburst", was captured on Lake Balaton in the village of Alsoors on Friday.

Part of the cloud is mixed with a strong localised downpour, leading to a beautiful rainbow on the surface of the water as the afternoon sun breaks through.

Film maker Alexandra Gregor said: ''There were people swimming on the lake at the time. The cloud was spectacular. I have not seen this before.''

Microbursts, which can be catastrophic for passing planes, are caused by powerful downdrafts from a storm or rain shower. They last from a few seconds to several minutes.

A wet microburst - as seen in the video - is accompanied by a high density of rain on the water's surface which gives the misty appearance and rainbow.

Lake Balaton in the Transdanubia region of Hungary is the biggest freshwater lake in central Europe.
