Incredible Edinburgh wartime photo gives glimpse of city during Second World War

A photo has resurfaced appearing to show the Waverley Steps filled with Edinburgh residents and military personnel during World War Two in 1943.

The image, which is part of an Imperial War Museum’s ‘Scotland in Wartime’ collection, was shared online by an Edinburgh history blogger over the weekend.

In the picture several members of the Edinburgh public can be seen travelling up and down the steps towards the train station in Scotland’s capital.

Two men and a woman can be seen coming down the steps towards the train station in military attire.

It is not known if they were members of the home guard or had been returning from service abroad fighting in Europe, North Africa or Asia.

Alongside this, men can be seen wearing what also looks like the traditional long coats and felt hats of the era and an elderly lady can be seen battling the steps with what appears to be her shopping.

A couple can also be spotted looking into the window of Alex Ferguson’s Edinburgh Rock.

P S McColl Chocolates and Steps Café signs are also visible on the left hand side of the picture.

The Imperial War Museum described the image as containing: “Service personnel and civilians go about their daily business in Edinburgh. Many people can be seen climbing up and walking down Waverley Steps, including a couple looking in the window of Alex Ferguson's Edinburgh Rock. P S McColl Chocolates and the Steps Cafe can be seen on the left of the photograph.”
