Incredible Edinburgh clip shows Walt Disney enjoying trip to the capital

An incredible video has surfaced showing Walt Disney's trip to Edinburgh over 60 years ago.

The iconic animator and creator of the worldwide sensation was captured in an interview outside Edinburgh Castle, as he gathered research for the film of Greyfriars Bobby.

Visiting the Scottish capital from across the Atlantic in 1960, Walt had made the trip just five years before he passed away in December 1965.

Shared to TikTok on Saturday by @auldedinburgh, the clip showed black and white footage of Walt speaking about the story of Greyfriars Bobby while standing just a few feet away from the one o'clock gun.

Being asked why he was in Scotland, the Disney creator said: "We’re doing a little survey for the story of Greyfriars Bobby, which is quite a classic around the world with dog lovers.”

Surprised that the tale is one known in the US, the interviewer asks if it is popular in the states, to which Walt replied “oh yes.”

He continued: “It’s well known and there is the Skye Terrier club and they’re fairly behind it, all dog lovers know it, it’s a classic.

“We’re using the original novel based on the incident that actually happened here, but we’re here now to see the actual locals, as we have to recreate the whole thing in the studio.

“We’ll do some of the photography out here and in the Scottish countryside, but it’s a picture from years ago, so we couldn’t use Edinburgh as it is today."

Released in 1961, the film went on to star Alex Mackenzie and Donald Crisp. You can watch the full interview clip here.
