Increased police presence planned at Forest Recreation Ground after Arboretum gates locked

Police are expecting large numbers at the Forest Recreation Ground on Wednesday evening after Nottingham City Council closed two city parks.

The Arboretum and the Lenton Recreation Ground were closed by the council on Wednesday (March 31) to prevent more crowds gathering and drinking outdoors.

It comes after "appalling" scenes pictured on both Monday and Tuesday saw hundreds of people visiting the city's beauty spots before leaving litter strewn across the floor.

Nottingham City Council says that it "regrets having to take this action", but that the actions of a "thoughtless minority" left it with no other choice.

And a leading police inspector in the city says that extra resources are being deployed to the Forest Recreation Ground on Wednesday evening in preparation for more crowds.

Neighbourhood Inspector Amy English told Nottinghamshire Live: "On Monday we saw behaviour that we wouldn't expect at any time, let alone in the midst of a pandemic, at the Arboretum.

"We took steps to address that yesterday and to ensure that we don't have a repeat and the day generally went without incident.

"There will be an increased presence at the Arboretum and Forest Rec today, and a dispersal order is still in place.

"If anyone commits antisocial behaviour and refuses to comply, they will be given a direction to leave the area.

"We will still have officers patrolling the Arboretum along with a really increased presence at the Forest Rec.

"We saw yesterday that people did make their way to the Forest Rec and we moved our officers accordingly.

"With the Arboretum closed and with the good weather, with people wanting to get out in the sun and enjoy themselves responsibly, I would expect the Forest Rec to be busy today."

Inspector English adds that no fines were issued at the Forest Recreation Ground on Tuesday evening, and officers will be focusing on confiscating alcohol from people on Wednesday.

Speaking on closing the Arboretum and the Lenton park, Nottingham City Council said the move was necessary following "appalling scenes" on Monday.

Councillor David Mellen, city council leader, said: “We have taken steps to prevent a repeat of the appalling scenes we witnessed at the Arboretum on Monday evening.

"Today, the Arboretum is closed along with Lenton Recreation Ground where similar problems arose.

"We regret having to take this action, since everyone has been looking forward to the chance to visit our parks, now that easing of restrictions means we can meet up to six other people outdoors.

"Sadly, the actions of a thoughtless minority has spoilt that. We will keep the situation under review and hope to reopen parks as soon as possible.

"The Forest Recreation Ground remains open and is a larger, safer space where people can spread out more easily."

Both the scenes at the Arboretum and the Forest Recreation Ground caused uproar amongst the community after litter was strewn across both sites.

It meant Nottingham City Council's cleansing teams had to be redeployed to clear up the mess on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

Councillor Mellen added: “At our other parks, we have increased patrols of Community Protection Officers who along with police officers will continue to rigorously enforce the ban on drinking in public spaces that's in place across Nottingham.

"None of this would be necessary if people took their own personal responsibility seriously, especially at a time when we need to be much more cautious in the way we behave and follow the gradual lifting of restrictions, if we are to hope to put this pandemic behind us."
